| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to survey and analyze the perceptions of two groups of educators on the performance of selected principals in the San Antonio Independent School District. The criteria used to evaluate these principals were based on those used in the appraisal of Texas administrators. One group of educators was the principals whose performance was being evaluated. The other group was comprised of the teachers at the schools where these principals were the head administrators. All 13 of the par ticipating schools had a return rate of 60% or higher from the teachers. The overall rate of return for the study was 64.44%. A total of 337 teachers participated in the study, 123 at the secondary level and 214 at the elementary level. The participating schools were all in one cluster in San Antonio ISD, i.e., one high school and its feeder schools. Findings: Of the 40 statements on the survey instrument, significant differences were found in eight in the comparisons between the perceptions of the principals about their own performance and the perceptions of the teachers about the performance of these principals. In all eight of these statements, the principals (as a group) rated themselves higher than the teachers (as a group) rated therm A comparison was also made between the perceptions of the elementary versus the secondary teachers. Significant differences were found in 31 of the 40 statements with secondary teachers always rating their principals higher than elementary teachers rated their principals. Principals were provided with anonymous results of the survey for their campus. Principals were unanimous in commenting that they found the results of the survey beneficial to them There was no agreement on whether or not the principals were surprised by the results. Additional studies might include how personnel react to different key words and the difference of perceptions between elementary and secondary teachers. The study might be improved by shortening the appraisal form A suggestion was made that the study not be conducted at the end of the school year. A committee of teachers and principals could be formed to modify the instrument. |
