Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine perceived impact
of academic teaming on student self esteem at Creekside
Intermediate School in order to develop a site-based
administrative strategy that could be implemented in
other intermediate schools, as well as improve the
Creekside system. This study provides data on the
viability of academic teaming in the intermediate school
setting. The study was done in the 1992-1993 school year.
Research questionnaires were developed, one completed by
staff members and one completed by the student
population. Some questions in the student questionnaire
varied because present academic teaming organization
varied. The questionnaires addressed staff and student
perceptions of school climate, site-based academic
teaming and its effect on student self-esteem, the
communication process, and student academic success. The
total staff population was surveyed. Fifty-six staff
members were surveyed. One team of students out of each
grade level, 6th, 7th and 8th, was surveyed. This was a
group of 132 6th graders, 112 7th graders, and 131 8th
graders. A random selection of teams was used. Teams at
Creekside are heterogenously grouped. The data from this
study indicated that respondents to the
questionnaire enjoyed being part of the Creekside family.
They indicated that a structure of academic teaming along
with some type of flexible block scheduling was extremely
important to the education of students. Students saw this
structure as comfortable, safe, and as providing a system
in which they could grow academically and emotionally.
Teachers indicated that this structure allowed them to be
better, more flexible teachers who work as part of a team
to better educate students. The results of the
questionnaires in the study were prepared for analysis by
the researcher. The data were reflected in a series of
tables to indicate perceptions of staff and students in an
attempt to recognize strengths and weaknesses in the
academic teaming system.
Replicating this research study would provide a comparison
of strengths and weaknesses from year to year and could
take into consideration changes taking place.
