| Abstract: | A program m able °Pheal-fiber delay gne using optical switches is investigated. The alpfiber optical switch is a MaC^'2 eh n d er interferometer w ith a piezoelectric transducer in each arm, which Pr°duces phase modulation by straining the fiber. The characteristics of the switch are: 0.25 dB insertion loss, - 2 1 dB extinction ratio, and 30 gsec switching time. 16 different time delays are demonstrated by appropriately choosing the states of four of these switches which are corrected by fiber of different lengths. The total insertion loss of 1.8 dB for light passihg through four Switches and 30 m of fiber is an im provem ent of abou t 2 0 dB over w hat can be achieved in the sam e configuration with state-of_the-art integrated 0ptic switches in lithium niobate. |
