| Summary: | Picolinic acid and related ligands are known to increase the rate of Gif-type reactions up to 50-fold, while the corresponding phosphonic acid stops Gif-type reactions instantly. Clearly the synthesis of new ligands which are capable of effecting increases in the yield and rate of these reactions is an important objective. This thesis describes synthetic approaches to a new class of ligands containing two picolinic acid units conected together by a non-oxidizable chain. An improved procedure for the activation of methyl pyridines involving condensation of the derived picolyl lithium salt with diethyl oxalate or benzaldehyde is developed. |
