| Abstract: | With the development of a group of chemicals known as Ergosterol Biosynthesis Inhibitors (EBI's) the fungicide use pattern in cereals has changed dramatically. Conventional chemicals were used only as preventive sprays; with EBI's, curative or eradicative control is possible. Extensive field experiments were conducted with a number of EBI's (both seed treatment and foliar spray chemicals) at several locations in South and Central Texas over two growing seasons to determine effectiveness of these chemicals in controlling leaf rust of wheat and crown rust of oat. These diseases generally are serious problems in wheat and oat cultivation in South and Central Texas. Seed treatment of wheat had some early effects on disease development, but the overall effect on grain yield and its components was insignificant Foliar spray treatments provided reasonably good leaf rust control, and yield increases as high as 153% were obtained. Effect of oat seed treatment were less pronounced on crown rust, but effects of foliar spray treatments were more pronounced than those observed for leaf rust of wheat. Yield advantages as high as 331% were observed in oat as a result of foliar spray treatments. Path analyses revealed that in both wheat and oat, number of functional tillers per unit area and seed weight are the major contributor of yield. Positive interplot interference in rust disease development was evident when wheat and oat were grown within the same species, but the effect of interplot interference on grain yield was less pronounced. |
