| Summary: | The study sought to identify principles appropriate for the Continuing Education Unit gerontology instruction offered by the Texas Gerontological Consortium for Continuing Education (TGCCE) as well as practices reflective of those principles. Four phases comprised the study. In Phase I the researcher developed a survey instrument on gerontology instruction principles. Principles for the survey were adapted from Chapter 3 (Sullivan, 1990) of the second edition of Standards and Guidelines for Gerontology Programs (Rich, Connelly, & Douglass, 1990), a publication of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. The survey instrument was mailed to all TGCCE institutional representatives, asking them to assess the importance of principles and assess their institution's level of implementation of those principles. Twenty-one TGCCE institutional representatives responded by completing and returning the Phase I survey. Respondents rated 23 of the 24 recommended principles in the survey as "quite important" or "moderately important," indicating that they considered the survey principles to be appropriate and important for TGCCE instruction. Phase II consisted of a case study of a single institution actively offering TGCCE courses. At that site, Houston Community College, Northwest (HCCS), the researcher interviewed employers, institutional representatives, and instructors associated with TGCCE instruction. Data collection from current students included in-class surveys and class evaluations. HCCS students who had completed the Consortium's three basic certificate courses received surveys asking them to evaluate the courses. In Phase III respondents to the first survey received a follow-up survey instrument which incorporated data from the first survey and the case study. The follow-up survey asked institutional representatives to consider the principles from the first survey and describe their implementation of those principles. All 21 of the first survey respondents completed and returned the survey. In Phase IV of the study the researcher developed an Executive Brief which summarized findings of the study. The Executive Brief was disseminated to TGCCE members at the close of the study. |
