Description
Summary:Education is rapidly changing. Many feel that one of the major problems in education is the leadership of our schools. The preparation of school administrators has been under great scrutiny. Business is calling for a better trained graduate; universities are revamping their training programs and parents are alarmed by what is happening in our schools today. The purpose of this study is to examine the training and preparation of middle school principals. The study focuses on the perceptions of practitioners in the field. The study asks middle school principals to consider the competencies in the ten domains developed by the Texas Lead Center as modified by the Professional Studies Doctoral Program at Texas A&M University and to select the two most important for each domain. The study was done in conjunction with three parallel studies which surveyed elementary principals, high school principals and superintendents. one of the questions the study seeks to answer is whether administrators at different levels perceive the need for level specific competencies to be stressed in their preparation programs. In other words, should all administrators be trained in the same way or are there some esoteric skills and/or knowledge relevant to a particular level such as middle school principals. The study utilized survey research methods. Systematic sampling procedures were used to develop a sample of 400 middle school principals in the state of Texas. A postal questionnaire was sent to the entire sample. The usable response rate was 80.1%. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the responses using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The results from each domain were ranked using the observed means and controlling for overlap by examining the confidence intervals for each competency in each domain. After examining the middle school principal survey, a comparison was made of the results from all four companion studies using the same techniques. The findings show a great deal of homogeneity in the perceptions of administrators at all levels with respect to their perceptions of what competencies are critical to job success at their level.
