Abstract:The focus of this work is the description of a graphics system and software package that allows for the flexible construction of time series and spatial graphs and plots. We begin with a review of common plots used to display time series and spatial data and we proceed to show how these basic graphs can be extended and enhanced using color and the graphical techniques of ordered repetition (small multiple, layering and animation). Furthermore we show how user programmable interactive graphics can further extend the power of our graphics system. We describe in detail how to implement such a graphics system using a flexible graphical object oriented design. We discuss the device independent and dependent stages of the graphics generation process including device dependent implementations of the graphics for X and PostScript. We review the problem of object initialization and present our solution which involves the use of a resource database. Colors and colorbar generation and handling are also covered. We continue by introducing the strip plot and discussing its qualities in displaying long time series. We reexamine the image contour plot and show how it enables us to solve the problems of contour animation and contour labeling in a relatively easy fashion. Finally we examine an algorithm to automatically determine the matrix structure of a matrix plot. This entire work is done within the context of writing a new interactive data analysis package called MISHA.
