Description
Summary:Abstract: "This paper describes the Hypertext Conversion Tool (HCT), a tool for converting documents into hypertext. A frame-based representation language is used for document representation. Techniques from the fields of information retrieval and artificial intelligence are combined to determine semantic associations (links). Source documents are Interleaf versions of technical manuals. Definitional, synonym and explicit links are created. Definitional links are made to a glossary. Synonym links are made by replacing occurrences of titles and substrings of titles with links. Semantic links are generated using information retrieval.
A frame-based language is then used to represent the document. Heuristic rules are applied to the document model. Heuristics are used to create new links and to prune links previously created (by information retrieval methods). The links produced by the conversion process were evaluated. The evaluation demonstrated the approach to link determination was effective. The number of semantic links with undesirable ratings was minimized through the combination of methods from information retrieval and artificial intelligence."
