| Summary: | Abstract: "Imprecise computation is a promising model for dealing with timing constraints imposed by the environment. However, the assumptions of imprecise computation regarding the availability of partial solutions, the estimation of resource requirements, and the independence of computation steps present some difficulties in its application to real- time rule-based systems. To address these issues, we propose a task- oriented reasoning model that facilitates the use of reactive and predictive imprecision techniques and a hierarchical treatment of resource constraints. Instead of embedding these techniques in rules, we incorporate these imprecision techniques into the control mechanism of a rule-based system. We have designed a general AI architecture that supports the model and the hierarchical hybrid imprecision technique. The task-oriented reasoning model, the hierarchical hybrid imprecision technique and the general AI architecture together form a framework of resource-bounded reasoning for real-time AI systems." |
