The purpose of this study was to determine the extent that the Bi/Polar Seminar does or does not enhance the self-esteem in Hearne High School students. An experimental research methodology was used to gather data from ar. experimental and control group. This research was conducted for the purpose of explaining the effects of three independent variable (treatment, gender, and ethnicity) and their interaction on a dependent variable, the Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory. Eight Bi/Polar Seminars were conducted with 262 high school students involved. Four of the Seminars were for the experimental group and four were for the control group. Students were given the Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory as a pretest and posttest. The first research question concerning gains in self-esteem by those who participated in the Bi/Polar Seminar found that students had statistically significant gains. The second question looking for significant differences between gains in males and females found that both gained but the only statistically significant gain was among females in the area of personal self-esteem which includes depression, anxiety, sensitivity and worry. The third question looked for gains by ethnicity. All ethnic groups gained as a result of the treatment. The only significant difference in gains was the area of social self-esteem or relationships with others. The fourth question looked at interaction between the Bi/Polar Seminar and gender. Two areas of self-esteem proved significant for females: general self-esteem (feelings of success, happiness, importance) and total self-esteem. The last question dealt with interaction between the Bi/Polar Seminar and ethnicity. Although there was an increase in all areas, only one area, social self-esteem, was statistically significant. In this area, Hispanic students and White students increased their mean by a higher margin than the African American students. Hearne High School will continue to use the Bi/Polar Seminar as one method of increasing self-esteem in students.
