| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to determine the statistical competencies of a certain group of future elementary and middle school teachers. A test was given to make this determination and then student interviews were conducted to detect conceptual and procedural errors in students work. The subjects of this study were enrolled in a mathematics course required of future elementary and middle school teachers at a regional university in East Texas. They had received instruction in probability and statistics two weeks prior to the testing instrument used for this study. The interviews occurred two to three weeks after the test was given. After administering the test and conducting the interviews, it was determined that students were lacking in statistical competencies. Not only were they lacking in these competencies, but it was discovered during the interviews that students also held misconceptions regarding statistical topics that should be addressed in further research. |
