Description
Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher expectations and attitudes towards computer assisted language learning. In this study, a survey to measure attitudes towards computer assisted language learning and teacher expectations was developed and administered to members of TESOL which belong to the computer assisted language learning interest section. The data was analyzed using correlational procedures. There was a gap between actual usage of program types and what respondents wanted to use. The respondents preferred collaborative and facilitative CALL usage. On the other hand, the respondents, based on the data, actually use instructional programs more than collaborative programs. The respondents preferred a pedagogue view of CALL usage as opposed to a magister view. The respondents favored a communicative view of CALL usage as opposed to a noncommunicative view. Respondents that had less computer experience tended to disagree with a communicative view of CALL as opposed to a noncommunicative view of CALL. Respondents had higher expectations in the areas of comprehension than in the areas of production for second language learners. Respondents tended to think that second language learners will be unable to achieve minimal levels of proficiency in listening and speaking at the end of a second language program. There was a relationship between a pedagogue view of CALL usage and high teacher expectations. This relationship suggests that teacher expectations are related to CALL usage.
