| Abstract: | Using panel data for 3,805 participants followed between early adolescence and young adulthood, patterns of coping patterns and changes in these patterns are described. At both life stages more socially approved mechanisms are adopted, and changes between life stages reflect increasing use of more socially responsible coping patterns. The nature of the patterns adopted is influenced, in part by the person's social identities related to gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, and by their interactions. Psychological well-being at each stage is influenced by the nature of the coping mechanisms adopted and the interactions between coping mechanisms and social identities. |
