Abstract:	The purpose of the present study was to examine Mexican American college students' performance on psychological measures of adjustment and personality traits and to assess the influence of acculturation level on test performance. The specific tests studied were the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF). Data for this study were obtained from two separate samples of Mexican American college students in south Texas. Descriptive and multivariate methods were utilized in order to evaluate test performance and the relationship between acculturation level and scores on the scales of the MMPI and 16PF. The MMPI sample demonstrated significant departures from the MMPI norm group, and scored significantly higher on scales that correlate with rebelliousness, alienation and increased mental activity. Moreover, the MMPI scale means depicted the sample as independent, conscientious, energetic, sensitive and creative. The 16PF data revealed few remarkable deviations from the norm. The small differences found indicated that subjects in the sample were more concrete in thinking, more practical, down to earth, and socially aware. In terms of supporting various hypotheses concerning the association between acculturation and adjustment, regression analysis provided support for the negative relationship between MMPI scale scores and acculturation level. Personality traits as measured by the 16PF proved to be positively correlated with acculturation level. The strongest relationships were between acculturation and personality traits reflecting positive coping abilities. Multivariate canonical analyses also illustrated the various relationships between moderator variables and the measures of adjustment and personality.
