The opening paragraphs of this letter of Abbé Maillard are a translation of the first part of his letter to M. de Lalane, superior of the Séminaire des missions étrangères in Paris, published from the original ms. in volume 3 of Les soirées canadiennes, Quebec, 1863, pages [289]-426. Except in the first paragraphs, the two letters are entirely different. The "Memorial of the motives of the savages" has also been attributed to Maillard. cf. Casgrain.
