Description
Abstract:Twenty-one mature captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were used for this project during the breeding seasons of 1986 to 1990. The does were allowed to interact individually with a vasectomized teaser buck twice each day during the breeding season to determine behavioral estrus. Does exhibiting behavioral estrus were then placed on one of four drug treatments. The first objective was to examine two treatments for the synchronization of estrus. One treatment used medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) in an intravaginal pessary while the other treatment employed prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha). Using the MAP intravaginal pessary or PGF2 alpha, signs of behavioral estrus occurred within 1-5 days post treatment 43.7% and 50.0% of the time, respectively. The second objective was to examine two treatments for synchronization-superovulation. The first treatment used MAP + pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin while, the second treatment employed PGF2 alpha + follicle stimulating hormone. Both treatments appeared to be unsuccessful in these does based on observation of the ovaries and detection of behavioral estrus by the teaser buck. The third objective was to develop and refine techniques for embryo transfer in white-tailed deer. Nonsurgical embryo collection techniques were employed 24 times with 19 successful catheterizations of the cervix (79.2%). Four successful nonsurgical catheterizations of the cervix resulted in only one ovum or embryo being recovered (21.0%) in the embryo collection medium. Two embryos or ova were recovered in the embryo collection medium during 4 other successful nonsurgical catheterizations of the cervix (21.0%). In eleven successful nonsurgical catheterizations of the cervix no embryos or ova were recovered in the embryo collection medium (58%). A total of 12 embryos or ova were recovered in the embryo collection medium during the 19 successful nonsurgical catheterizations of the cervix...
