The effects of menopausal status and exercise intensity on short-term changes in plasma lipids and lipoproteins /

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term response of blood lipids and lipoproteins to a single bout of walking exercise in women. In addition, this investigation was designed to examine the influence of menopausal status and exercise intensity on the short-term response to exercise. Blood samples were obtained from 12 premenopausal and 11 postmenopausal women 24 h prior to, immediately postexercise (IPE), and at 24 h and 48 h after the performance of an exercise bout at either 50% or 70% VO[2max]. The duration of the exercise bout, that required the expenditure of 350 kilocalories (kcal), was calculated using the results from a VO[2max] test performed within 7 d prior to the exercise bout. The second exercise bout was performed approximately one month later. Blood samples for premenopausal women were obtained during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. All subjects adhered to a defined diet 14 d prior to and throughout the blood sampling period of 4 d. All samples were analyzed for serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TCHOL), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and its subfraction HDL3 -C using standard analytic procedures. Low-density lipoprotein (LDLC), HDL2 -C subfraction, TCHOL/HDL-C ratio, and HDL2 -C/HDL3 -C ratio were subsequently calculated. All concentrations were corrected for plasma volume shifts. The results of this study indicated that concentrations of TCHOL, LDL-C, TG and a TCHOL/HDL-C ratio were significantly higher in postmenopausal compared to premenopausal women. Additionally, the postmenopausal women were older, had a higher percent body fat, and were less fit. No significant differences were noted in the short-term response to exercise between the groups nor between the two exercise intensity conditions. Across both groups, the HDL2 -C concentration increased IPE, while TG concentrations increased IPE and subsequently declined to below baseline concentrations by 24 h and 48 h. These results confirm the notion that postmenopausal women are at increased risk for coronary heart disease compared to their premenopausal counterparts. Additionally, isocaloric walking exercise (350 kcal) performed at moderate to high intensities evokes significant short-term changes in blood lipids and lipoproteins in women.
