| Summary: | Several stages are involved in the production of a computer-generated character animation. First, a concept that satisfies any previously defined design constraint (e.g., resource limitations and/or client specifications) is developed. Second, a more structured and refined concept is developed and expressed by way of storyboards or animatics and through careful analysis of all tasks necessary to complete the animation. Third, object data capable of performing the motion required by the animation is constructed. Fourth, the object data is animated. Finally, the animated sequences are rendered and visual and sound information are edited to the output medium. The following thesis elaborates on the above mentioned stages by presenting a detailed account of a case study involving the production of a specific computer-generated character animation. In addition to describing the stages involved in the production of computer animations in general, the thesis also addresses problems specific to the particular task. Most important among these were problems associated with the modeling and animation of articulated flexible body characters within the confines of a rigid body, key-frame oriented system. |
