Summary:	Siegmund and Sieglinde meet in the house of Hunding, Sieglinde's husband, and fall in love. Hunding pursues them and kills Siegmund even though Brunnhilde tries to protect him in defiance of the law of the gods. Brunnhilde succeeds in helping the pregnant Sieglinde to escape. The god Wotan is furious with his daughter Brunnhilde but is moved by her pleading. At her request he causes her to fall into a deep sleep on a rock surrounded by a ring of fire which only a fearless man can penetrate.
