"Cavalleria rusticana" is a one-act melodrama of jealousy, betrayal, and murder in rural Sicily. "Pagliacci" is a tragic two-act play-within-a-play set in a Calabrian town in 1865, in which the characters--members of a travelling theatrical troupe embroiled in jealousy and suspicion--are unable to separate the drama they are performing from the sordid reality of their own lives.
