| Abstract: | The goal of this study was to conceptualize and develop a measure of the novelty construct in the context of pleasure travel. A model describing the role of the novelty construct in pleasure travel destination choice decisions was developed. It suggested that there was a direct relationship between arousal seeking tendency and the novelty construct. A valid and reliable 21-item scale was developed using four independent samples consisted of three university student samples (n=204, n=169, and n=255) and a Non-Student Texas visitor sample (n=2 90). The scale operationalized and empirically measured the construct of novelty in a tourism context. It consisted of four interrelated but distinctive and stable dimensions; Thrill, Change from Routine, Boredom Alleviation, and Surprise. The items measuring the dimensions were internally consistent. The scale was judged to have content validity by an initial panel of experts. The test-retest reliability and the split-half reliability coefficients were satisfactory. The scale was demonstrated to have convergent, theoretical, discriminant, and criterion validity in terms of its expected correlations with other measures. It also differentiated between Winter Texans and other visitors to Texas, which were a-priori designated as "known groups", offering further evidence of its criterion validity. |
