| Abstract: | This study examined the locus of control differences reported by gifted, learning disabled, gifted-learning disabled, and regular education children. It focused primarily on the perceptions reported by the gifted-learning disabled group. The gifted-learning disabled children were found to have neither a general or academic locus of control pattern which was representative of the group as a whole. The results seemed to indicate that there may be multiple groups of gifted-learning disabled children with respect to their locus of control perceptions. Only the learning disabled group of children reported consistent academic and general locus of control perceptions. The learning disabled group presented a distinctive external locus of control. The gifted-learning disabled group reported significant similarities in locus of control to the gifted group. This may have resulted from the large number of gifted-learning disabled children served in the gifted setting. The regular education and the gifted-learning disabled groups were similar as well, but all of the other groups were significantly different from each other. The only descriptive statistic which seemed to have a bearing on locus of control was academic setting. This seemed to be a factor with gifted-learning disabled children only. The great variations of placements in which the gifted-learning disabled children were served may have accounted for these results. |
