| Abstract: | The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between selected mechanical properties of plastic films and pinhole development due to flexing. Pinholes in plastic films were generated by a new test method. The vibration-flex test used the mechanical vibration of helical compression springs and a vibration table to induce flexing in specimens of plastic films. The application of computer vision technology for determining the size of pinholes was also introduced in this study. The mechanical properties of plastic films determined were load/displacement, impact strength, and initial tear load. Statistical regression analysis (linear and multiplicative models) indicated that the load/displacement and impact strength were significant variables, while the initial tear load was not a significant variable. The analysis revealed that the number of pinholes developed in plastic films were directly porportional to the load/displacement and inversely proportional to the impact strength. The models showed that the impact strength had a greater influence than the load/displacement. |
