Abstract:A viscous shock layer analysis method has been developed which includes the effects of chemical nonequilibrium, multi-temperature effects, viscous effects, and radiative gasdynamic coupling. This flowfield analysis has been used to investigate a new multicomponent diffusion method and the effects of an existing thermodynamic nonequilibrium method. A new thermodynamic nonequilibrium model is developed based on a recent atomic excitation method for nitrogen and oxygen. Comparisons between the old and new thermodynamic models in part verify the assumptions used in the older model but indicate a possible over correction of the older method. Comparisons with flight test data show good agreement with the current methodology but show a need for improvement in the modeling of molecular nonequilibrium excitation.
