| Abstract: | Feedback is critical to learning at motor task. Knowledge of results (KR) is one form of feedback which is typically manipulated. For purposes of this study summary (KR), which involves delaying the presentation of KR until a predetermined number of trials has been completed, was manipulated, along with practice, in 4 experiments. The task used was one of isometric force production. Experiment 1 compared 3 differing summary lengths and found the longer summary lengths to be beneficial for improving response bias. Experiment 2 manipulated KR and practice and KR between 3 groups. The data indicated that KR was beneficial for reductions in response variability while practice either with or without KR was beneficial for response bias. Experiments 3 and 4 were follow-up experiments to Experiment 2. Experiment 3 manipulated KR while holding practice constant and Experiment 4 manipulated practice while holding KR constant across conditions. The results of Experiments 3 and 4 were somewhat contradictory to those of experiment 4. Based upon the results of the four experiments in this study the following conclusions were established. 1. Summary KR, within the limitations of 16 trial blocks, offers the most effective schedule, in terms of retention performance, for presentation of KR. 2. Alterations in the number of trials summarized vs. the number of trials practiced offers a potential method of differentially affecting response bias and response variability. |
