Description
Abstract:This dissertation presents the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of 13 new complexes from two main classes of molybdenum compounds, namely neutral and cationic. The neutral compounds are of the general type, Mo2X4(PR3)4. This class of compounds has been known since 1972. However, the chemistry of compounds where X = OR, F, or CH3 was either unknown or not well understood, previous to this work. Described herein is the chemistry of Mo2Me4(PR3)4 species which have been shown to react readily and efficiently with proton sources to generate methane gas and dimolybdenum complexes of interest Three species prepared by this method are Mo2(OC6F5)4(PMe3)4, Mo2F4(PMe3)4, and Mo2F4(PMe2Ph)4. The chemistry of ionic complexes is much more diverse. The complex, [Mo2(NCCH3)10][BF4]4, represents the first structurally characterized quadruply bonded dimolybdenum core surrounded completely by neutral ligands. This complex acts as a source for the [Mo2]^4+ core as shown by its reaction with Mo2(O2CCH3)4 and LL (LL = dppm, dppe, dppee) to yield complexes of the type [Mo2(O2CCH3)2(LL)2][BF4]2. Mononuclear compounds of the type [Mo(O)(F)(LL)2][BF4] (LL = dppe, dppee) have also been isolated from the above reactions. All of these compounds have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments and NMR, IR, and UV-visible spectroscopy, where appropriate.
