Abstract:This dissertation describes the recovery performance of horizontal wells in mixed pattern waterfloods. It extends streamtube modeling techniques to horizontal wells by approximating the horizontal wellbore with a finite, distributed line source in two-dimensions. Together with the conventional (vertical well) solution, an integral expression for the stream function was developed. Streamlines extracted from this expression were used to implement waterflood recovery performance calculations. Recovery performance at breakthrough and post breakthrough for horizontal wells and mixed five-spot patterns were simulated using horizontal wellbore lengths of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of well spacing. Results demonstrate that horizontal well five-spots with horizontal injectors and horizontal producers are superior to conventional five-spots and to other mixed patterns. Furthermore, mixed patterns could accelerate recovery over that of conventional five-spots but require more injected water and give a slightly lower sweep efficiency at breakthrough. Finally, it is shown that when both injectors and producers are horizontal wells, results indicate that, in general, the breakthrough recovery increases with increase in wellbore length. However, it was observed that, under unfavorable mobility ratio floods and for wellbore lengths less than 25% of well spacing, that the breakthrough sweep efficiency decreased with increase in wellbore length.
