Description
Abstract:This study examined the potential influence of the special population characteristics of ethnicity and gender on ratings in adaptive behavior scores. Two questions were addressed. The first question was designed to determine to what degree Hispanic ethnicity impacted on five cluster scores found in the Scales of Independent Behavior. These included Motor Skills, Social and Communication Skills, Personal Living Skills, Community Living Skills, and the Broad Independence cluster score. The second research question examined the effect of gender (for Hispanics) on their adaptive behavior skills as measured by the Scales of Independent Behavior. The Scales of Independent Behavior, (SIB), 1984, was utilized as the data-gathering instrument. Two hundred-forty subjects were randomly selected from a school district in South Texas. Conclusions from this study suggested that the Scales of Independent Behavior is a relatively adequate instrument that could be utilized to gather appropriate information about the school age Hispanic population. The statistical differences, with two exceptions, favored the Hispanic child. The exception occurred at ages eight and ten, when the norm population performed statistically higher in the Community Living Skills area. This area taps into the child's ability to orient to an immediate neighborhood, community, and society. Findings with this study indicate that the Hispanic sample scores higher than the normed counterpart in measures associated with Social and Communication, Personal Living or Community Living Skills at all ages except ages eight, ten, and eleven. Statistical differences vanish in the area of Motor Skills and in the composite category of Broad independence. The SIB becomes more effective as the age of the child increases...
