| Abstract: | In order for public and private institutions and rehabilitation agencies to provide the best possible preparation for visually impaired individuals seeking competitive employment, a comprehensive taxonomy of employment skills is needed. Information is also needed concerning the relative importance of employment skills for visually impaired individuals who are seeking to obtain and maintain competitive employment. The dual purpose of this study was to: (a) develop a taxonomy of the skills necessary for visually impaired individuals to obtain and maintain competitive employment and (b) assess of the importance of the employment skills in the taxonomy. A taxonomy of skills necessary for visually impaired individuals to obtain and maintain competitive employment was developed by the researcher. The information used to develop the taxonomy was drawn from an extensive review of literature. The second purpose of this study was accomplished through telephone interviews conducted in three phases. The sample was made up of visually impaired individuals who: (a) were legally blind at the completion of their post-secondary or rehabilitation training; and (b) were competitively employed at the time of the study. Phase I identified the tasks the subjects performed while on their jobs and the skills they used to accomplish their tasks. The second phase of the interviews obtained detail about the tasks performed and the employment skills reported by the subjects. A seven-point importance rating system was used in the third phase of the interviews. The subjects individually rated the importance of the skills they had reported in terms of obtaining their present employment, maintaining themselves in their employment situations, and up-grading their competencies for advancement. The data collected during the three phases of the interviews were used to prioritize the employment skills in terms of their importance to the success of visually impaired individuals in competitive employment. |
