Description
Abstract:The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) has been revised and restandardized on new national norms. It is unclear if past MMPI results with incarcerated sex offenders will generalize to MMPI-2 interpretations. The goal of this study was to provide normative data and to clarify MMPI-2 interpretations by developing a Pedophile Treatment critical items list. The MMPI-2 profiles of 60 pedophiles who volunteered for a prison based sex offender treatment program were examined. The subjects had a mean education of 10.25 years (s.d. = 2.25) and were primarily from the lower socio-economic levels. Results presented a modest elevation on scale 4 (T61) and a low point on scale 5 (T46). Although the subjects volunteered for treatment, full disclosure was lacking as shown by the elevated L scale (T60) and the average number of items omitted (M = 2.08, s.d. = 4.06, range: 0-17). The most common profiles within the clinical range were spike 4 and spike 1, but the total of these profiles included only 18.33% of the subjects. Compared to the national restandardization sample, significant differences (.001 alpha level) were found on the L scale, clinical scales 1, 2, 4, 5, 0 and the content scales Depression, Health, Bizarre Mentation, Cynicism, Antisocial Practices, Social Discomfort, and Negative Treatment Indicators. In light of previous MMPI research, these findings suggest that MMPI-2 profiles will be generally lower. In addition to modest, but consistent elevations on scale 4, this sample presented a defensive profile, no predominate two-point code type, and strong indications of somatic complaints as indicated by elevations on scale 1 and Health Concern scales. From a list of 232 items which were endorsed significantly more frequently than the national norm, a panel of sex offender treatment specialists identified 39 items considered to be clinically significant to the treatment of pedophiles. The content themes of the Pedophile Treatment critical items were analyzed and separated into six areas of treatment concerns: Sexual Issues (5 items), Cognitive Distortions (8 items), Self-Concept (5 items), Social Issues (11 items), Family Issues (4 items), and Personal Issues (6 items).
