| Abstract: | This study examines the influence of acquiescence response style on test validity, and evaluates the usefulness of the Fantasia Acquiescence Scale (Fantasia, 1988). The Comrey Personality Scales (Comrey, 1970), the Fantasia Acquiescence Scale, and a replication of Comrey and Backer's (1970) biographical data form were administered to 100 undergraduates at Texas A&M University. Also, the author's peer rating form was mailed to six of each subject's friends and/or relatives. Comrey scales were used as predictors, and biodata and peer ratings were criteria measures. Nearly 82% of the peer rating forms were returned, and peer rating scales correlated significantly with corresponding Comrey subscales. Psychometric properties of the acquiescence test were stable, and similar to earlier evaluations of the scale. Replication of Comrey and Backer's (1970) study was generally not successful, but several other significant correlations were found between Comrey scales and biodata. Acquiescence was not found to correlate significantly with either the predictors or the criteria. Therefore, correlations between predictors and corresponding criteria did not significantly improve when the effects of acquiescence were statistically partialed out. A stepwise regression analysis showed acquiescence does account for variance in Comrey scores, but effects are small. Discriminant function analysis found that acquiescence can increase the ability of criteria to predict Comrey scores as much as 9.9%. The subjective "internal" personality traits (i.e., trust, emotional stability) were influenced more by acquiescence than more observable ones (i.e., activity level, extraversion). The significance of the findings was discussed, and future research proposed. |
