| Abstract: | The purpose of the study was: 1) to determine whether the academic achievement of Mexican American and Anglo American students was predicted by their achievement motivation as measured by their grade point averages, 2) to determine whether the academic achievement of Mexican American and Anglo American students was predicted by their achievement motivation as measured by performance on the California Achievement Test, 3) to determine whether the achievement motivation of Mexican American students was similar to or different from that of Anglo American students, and 4) to determine if there was a difference in achievement motivation between males and females within or between the two ethnic groups. One hundred and twenty eighth grade students participated in this study. Sixty were Mexican American and sixty were Anglo American. Each ethnic group had thirty males and thirty females. The scores on the 1969 Achieving Tendency Scales for Males and Females were utilized to identify whether students were more concerned about succeeding and learning or about avoiding failure. Twenty-seven students were also interviewed. Demographic and socioeconomic data were also collected. Data were analyzed by Pearson's Product Moment Correlation and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results indicated that: 1) there were no significant differences in the relationships between the achievement motivation scores and the grade point averages of Mexican American (r= -.01) or Anglo American students (r= .16), 2) there were no significant differences in the relationships between the achievement motivation scores and any of the scores on the California Achievement Test of Mexican American (r's ranged from -.01 to .12) or Anglo American students (r's ranged from .07 to .14)... |
