| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to describe selected personality characteristics of vocational trade and industrial education teachers that affect their learning. Since the traits of personality can be assessed, two instruments were utilized to assess a person's personality style. One instrument developed for the assessment of basic characteristics of personality is the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT). The other instrument which was utilized to determine personality characteristics was the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Findings revealed that the respondents' GEFT scores were distributed throughout the range of possible scores with clusters at 7-8 and at 12 and 14 (no subjects scored 13 or 16, despite clusterings at 12 and 14). The highest percentage (59.5%) of males falls into the 0-9 range (strongest field dependent) with the smallest percentage (9.5%) of males falling into the 16-18 range (strongest field independent). The females of this sample are fairly evenly distribute among the 0-8 range, the 12-14 range, the 15-18 range, and with no females falling into the 9-11 range. On the MBTI, the respondents were almost evenly divided on the Extraverted-Introverted dimension, while large differences existed between the two poles of the other dimensions, with Sensing, Thinking, and Judging predominating over their opposites. Almost three times as many respondents preferred Thinking as preferred Feeling as a basis for decision making. Results also indicated a strong leaning toward the combination of Sensing, Thinking, and Judging, whether Extraverted or Introverted. |
