Abstract:Preliminary data has suggested that the pre-heading storage of starch in the somatic tissues of a rice plant plays a significant role in grain yield. The storage of reserve carbohydrates in several varieties was quantified, and changes in gene expression that accompanied its accumulation were examined. The amounts of TNC (total nonstructural carbohydrate) in leaf, leaf sheath, culm and panicle tissues of the Texas rice variety Lemont, and several other varieties, were shown to be closely related to yield. The amount of TNC in the somatic tissues as well as the timing of its mobilization were shown to be important factors with respect to yield. Differentially expressed mRNA sequences that were regulated in either a tissue-related or temporal manner were isolated as cDNA clones. Several had high correlations with the TNC content of the somatic tissues. Further examination in both waxy and non-waxy rice varieties, showed that expression of some of these mRNAs correlated with the starch component of TNC but not with sucrose. Sequence analysis showed that some of these genes are involved in carbohydrate metabolism.
