Description
Abstract:This study tests the hypothesis that persistent cultural differences are manifested in those elements critical to cultural identification. The critical element in this test is the rural single-family house and the cultural differences represented are those in three sites in peripheral Europe. Comparisons were made of recently-built houses of similar materials among the sites to determine the degree to which such houses reflect cultural differences, and comparisons were made within each site between such houses and older houses constructed of traditional material to determine the degree to which such houses reflect cultural persistence. Essentially no similar work has been attempted or reported in English language geographical journals. Consequently, all data used in the study were obtained in the field. The three sites chosen are in the European periphery where cultural differences and house type variation are most evident. The three sites were the island of Scalpay in the Scottish Outer Hebrides, the village of Kostrze near Cracow in south-eastern Poland, and the village of Vasilika in south-central peninsular Greece. Test results conclude that houses of similar material persistently manifest cultural traits within a cultural region and houses of similar material persistently manifest cultural differences among culturally different regions. Thus, cultural differences may be seen in houses, even those of similar, non-endemic materials.
