Abstract:This purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher written comments of encouragement and praise on the locus of control of fourth and fifth grade spelling students. Two hundred and twenty-eight students from Montgomery Intermediate School in Montgomery, Texas were studied in this research. The locus of control of each student was assessed before and after the treatments by the Norwicki-Strickland Scale of Children's Locus of Control. Teacher written comments of encouragement or praise chosen form a list compiled by a panel of educational experts were assigned to student's spelling posttests in randomly determined groups for a six week grading period. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and correlations were used to analyze the data. At the p[less than or equal to].05 level, no statistical significance was found in the analysis of variance. However, the correlations did reveal a significance was found in the analysis of variance.
