| Abstract: | In recent years, finding appropriate solutions to contemporary architectural design problems has become very complex and obscure. Architects have applied computer-aided design (CAD) techniques to solve ill-defined design problems and design tasks; however, good graphics and drafting automation alone cannot solve essential design problems to achieve significant improvement in design quality and productivity. To handle the critical design decision making problems, the computer should handle the problem-solving design knowledge as well as the various technological and geometrical aspects during the various stages in the design process. A new design method, knowledge-aided design, is proposed and its conceptual and theoretical bases are discussed. Knowledge-aided design is a conceptual and theoretical model based on fundamental principles of design. It provides a problem-solving environment and a procedure for knowledge-based computer-aided architectural design which are based on cognitive science and artificial intelligence techniques. As a partial implementation of the theoretical model, a knowledge-aided design system for energy efficient building is developed. The system uses symbolic inference procedures to handle design decisions, solid modeling geometric representation, and an energy simulation program for energy efficient building design. The design knowledge and strategies of energy efficient building design are stored in the knowledge base of the system, and the system provides intelligent recommendation, evaluations, and suggestions using its design knowledge during the conceptual, schematic, and preliminary phases of design process. |
