Description
Abstract:Purpose. The purpose of the study was to compare recipients of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarships (a targeted agricultural scholarship program) to recipients of Opportunity Awards (a non-targeted scholarship program) at Texas A&M University. Methodology. The study was conducted during April and May of 1989. A random sample of 50 was drawn from each group of scholarship recipients from the years 1978, 1979, and 1980 who returned an initial questionnaire and agreed to participate in a follow-up study. A telephone survey was used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics were used to report personal characteristics. Frequencies were used to formulate a profile of a "typical" scholarship recipient. Where interval data were obtained, t values were calculated to determine if significant differences existed between group mean responses. Major findings. The groups were found to be different in terms of: (1) Academic aptitude (SAT score). (2) Current residence location (rural vs. metro). (3) Number of children born to married participants. (4) Level of collegiate participation. (5) Level of collegiate leadership. (6) Level of community participation. (7) Level of community leadership. (8) Agricultural perception. Recipients of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarships scored significantly higher in collegiate participation, collegiate leadership, community participation, community leadership, and agricultural perception. Opportunity Award recipients tended to live in metropolitan areas, while recipients of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarships resided in rural areas. It was concluded that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo should continue to target its scholarships in agriculture if the factors listed above are desired outcomes of the scholarship program.
