520 3 |a The purpose of this study was to address the effects of straight lecture versus a variety of methods of instruction on student achievement, student description of teaching, and the interaction of student motivation, cognition strategies, and resource management strategies. The population for this study consisted of four sections of GBA 181 Business Principles classes at Sam Houston State University. There were 73 subjects in the control group and 64 subjects in the experimental group. Both groups received a pre-achievement and post-achievement test, a Student Description of Teaching Questionnaire (SDT), and a Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Analysis of the data was accomplished through the use of The Analysis of Behavioral Science Data programs for groups-by-trial analysis of variance. Findings: 1. This study found method of instruction to be related to higher achievement in an undergraduate business class. 2. This study did not support the position that method of instruction is significantly related to student description of teaching in an undergraduate business class. 3. This study found no significant relation between method of instruction and gains or changes in student motivation, cognition, or resource management strategies in an undergraduate business class. Conclusions: Effectiveness in teaching depends not on a single method, but on a variety of instructional strategies.
