Description
Abstract:The purposes of this study were to validate the Student Perception of Teaching Effectiveness (SPTE) instrument; to determine whether significant correlations occurred between similar behavioral indicators in the SPTE and the Observation Record/Evaluation Record (OR/ER) of the Texas Teacher Appraisal System (TTAS); and to determine whether the clusters of items on the OR/ER were compatible with the clusters on the SPTE. This study was conducted to validate one component of a multi-data source system used to assess the Texas A&M Alternative Certification Program teaching Cohort I and II during 1986-1987 and 1987-1988. The SPTE was developed from the descriptors of effective teaching behavior of the OR/ER. Each descriptor was rephrased into a positive statement in terms of the student's viewpoint, vocabulary and ability or opportunity to assess the skill. The resulting 46 item SPTE was validated by a panel of experts. The SPTE was administered to 490 students of the teaching interns in Cohort I and II. Descriptive and correlational statistics were conducted on these data and a factor analysis was conducted on the SPTE data to determine whether the logical cluster of indicators in the OR/ER were compatible with empirically derived factor analyzed cluster of the SPTE. All tests were performed at the .05 level of significance. Based on the data obtained and the interpretation of subsequent analyses, the following conclusions were made: 1. The SPTE has a high degree of content validity with respect to the OR/ER of the Texas Teacher Appraisal System. 2. No statistically significant correlations were found between the items of the SPTE and the indicators in the OR/ER. 3. Factor analysis of the SPTE items demonstrated compatibility of the empirically derived factors of the SPTE items and the logical clusters (domains) of the OR/ER when the three domains of instructional strategies, presenting subject matter, and learning environment are combined, leaving classroom management as a separate factor.
