| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to identify and explore through a survey questionnaire submitted to Black graduate students at Texas A&M University in College Station and the University of Texas at Austin, those factors that prompt Black students to forego the pursuit of a doctoral program. The sample for this study consisted of 68 Black graduate students enrolled at Texas A&M University in College Station and 45 Black graduate students enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin. Fifty-one percent of the students at Texas A&M University returned the questionnaire in usable form, and 41 percent of the students at The University of Texas at Austin returned the questionnaire in usable form. Analysis of the data were conducted using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) on the "WYLBUR" Computer System at Texas A&M University. Findings: (1) This study identified several factors that prompt Black students to forego the pursuit of a doctoral program at Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at Austin. (2) Respondents indicated that dissatisfaction with various areas of the internal environment, academic environment, social environment and institutional services, as well as levels of racial discrimination, types of relationships with faculty, levels of deterrence and demographic status could deter the pursuit of a doctoral program at Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at Austin. Conclusions: Many factors appear to account for Black graduate students foregoing the pursuit of a doctoral program. Efforts must be made to remove some of these negative perceptions and experiences in order for institutions of higher education to attract and encourage more doctoral candidates. |
