| Abstract: | This research is focused on the design and development of methodologies to automate the design process of simulation modeling from a situation-theory based system description and a scenario driven model scenario definition. An effort is also made in this research to develop the conceptualization of the design process in order to understand the art of simulation modeling. Some concepts which are inconsistently used in simulation literature are clarified in a hope to rationalize the terminology and to enhance the communication of the ideas across the simulation community. There are seven areas of automated support for simulation model generation: namely, system description capture, model scenario definition, simulation model design, simulation model specification, simulation model translation, simulation model execution, and simulation result display. The output analysis and result interpretation belong to the activities of simulation analysis which is not specially addressed in this research. While much has been done in automating the "post design process" of simulation modeling, the first three areas are left to the simulation specialist. The motivation for this research is to provide automated support for these three areas and a link that ties them to the other areas so that the simulation modeling technology becomes more accessible to the end user. To accomplish this task, a Prestructured Situation Prototype method is developed to provide an ontology to assist the user in describing a prestructured system description from which the model structure, elements, and parameters of a generic model can be derived. A Scenario Driven mechanism (which includes a Performance Measures Selection method, a Dynamic Boundary Setting and a Sequence Consistency Maintenance method) is developed to enable the change of different scenarios of a generic model under the user's control without significant reprogramming effort... |
