| Abstract: | Although there has been marked improvements in educational attainment for blacks in the past 25-30 years, and a narrowing of the gap in educational attainment between blacks and whites, this disparity remains a major concern. Recently sociologists have explained educational attainment utilizing the status attainment model of Blau and Duncan. A substantial addition to the status attainment model has the inclusion of social psychological variables referred to as the "Wisconsin Model." The Wisconsin model has been used in a number of studies to analyze race differences in the process of status attainment. A recurrent theme in the above mentioned research is that the model does not explain the process of educational attainment as well for black respondents as it does for whites. The present research is concerned with the pattern of limited academic achievement which characterizes black male youth in our society. The research will investigate the effects of athletic participation on educational achievement for black male high school students. It should be noted that although this research is informed by the educational and status attainment literatures, it focuses on the impacts of being an athlete and being black for educational achievement patterns. |
