| Abstract: | Analytical and experimental procedures to determine the mode II delamination fracture toughness of unidirectional and multidirectional fiber reinforced composites have been developed using a J-integral approach. Linear and nonlinear beam theory were used to analyse the End Loaded Split laminate beam specimen to derive an approximate expression for the J-integral. A test method to evaluate the J-integral has been proposed. An experimental program has been performed which affecting mode II delamination of unidirectional and multidirectional composites. Mode II delamination fracture physics studies have been conducted and correlated to the microscopically obtained mode II delamination fracture toughness values. Strain fields ahead of crack tips are included and their usefulness in understanding mode II delamination has been addressed. |
