Description
Abstract:This research was designed to examine the relationship between the cognitive performance of adult students in a self-monitored computer assisted instruction (CAI) program and those in an instructor-monitored CAI program. A sample of 137 adult students was tested before and after the treatments using the General Educational Performance Index (GEPI). A locus of control orientation was measured before the treatment was administered using the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Scale (ANS-IE). The data were evaluated using analysis of variance and F tests. Two of the three planned comparisons showed significant differences in cognitive performance in regard to treatment/ gender factors. The third comparison showed no significant difference in cognitive performance in regard to treatment/locus of control interactions. Locus of control/ gender interactions showed a significant increase in the performance of more externally oriented males and more internally oriented females. The results of the analytical process demonstrated that all participants improved their cognitive performance. Trends in the data indicated that the instructor-monitored condition produced better performance than the self-monitored condition, and that locus of control was only significant when interacting with gender. It was concluded that students experiencing the CAI program benefited more when an instructor was present during the learning activity. It was also concluded that the gender does have an effect on performance in this type of GED preparatory program.
