Abstract:The primary objective of this study was to identify and prioritize the proficiencies which need to be addressed in technology teacher education to insure that technology education teachers are capable of presenting contemporary technological concepts and content to learners in their classes. To accomplish this objective, an open-ended survey and a five-point Likert-type importance scale were utilized. The initial phase involved mailing an open-ended survey to the 131 people who held memberships in both the National Association of Industrial and Technical Teacher Educators and the Council on Technology Teacher Education. These people served as the panel for this study. The panel identified 735 proficiencies in twelve categories in the first phase. Nine of these categories had been previously identified through the review of the literature and three were added by the panel. Responses from the initial phase were then combined on the basis of a key word analysis to generate 35 proficiencies which were rated by the panelists in the second phase of this study. The 131 panelists were asked to rate the importance of each of the 35 proficiencies on a five-point Likert-type scale. The panelists were also given an opportunity to comment on each proficiency. The mean of the responses for each proficiency was calculated and proficiencies were listed in rank order based on the mean. The outcome of the study was a set of proficiencies listed in the order of perceived importance. This list of proficiencies could guide the organization and implementation of programs for preparation of technologically proficient teachers of technology in the future.
