| Abstract: | Several important control problems are addressed in this dissertation. First the robust stability problem for a plant subject to perturbations of mixed type (parametric and unstructured) is examined. We first treat the case where the parametric perturbations enter the characteristic polynomial in a linear fashion. The unstructured perturbations are assumed to be stable H (subscript infinity symbol) perturbations or nonlinear feedback gains. Non conservative solutions which allow for the computation of both structured and unstructured stability margins are given. Next, the problem of multilinear parametric perturbations is considered, and the results concerning the linear case are generalized to this particular context. The second part of this dissertation is concerned with the comparison of time-invariant versus time-varying controllers for a linear time-invariant system, when the control objective is the optimal rejection of external disturbances. A general theoretical framework is introduced which is shown to encompass all the existing results in the literature. Moreover, a complete generalization of all the results concerning the time-invariant case is given for the case of periodic systems. |
