| Abstract: | Physiological and morphological responses of drought-resistant and drought-susceptible families of Pinus taeda L. seedlings to colonization by the ectomycorrhizal fungus, Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker and Couch (Pt), and to water deficits were studied. Since plant size and nutritional differences can confound ectomycorrhizal responses, growing environment, fertilization, and selection of experimental plants were controlled to obtain seedlings of similar size and nutrition.Seedlings naturally symbiotic with unidentified ectomycorrhizae had lower osmotic potentials than Pt seedlings in response to water deficits. Osmotic adjustment ranged from -0.19 to -0.39 MPa. Inoculation with Pt increased osmotic adjustment, which ranged from -0.22 to -0.52 MPa. Greater osmotic adjustments were found for Pt seedlings in response to the rapidly developing, cyclic water deficit for the drought-susceptible family, and in response to the slowly developing, single water deficit for the drought-resistant family.. |
