Description
Abstract:The problem of a semi-infinite mode III crack that suddenly begins to propagate at a constant speed is analyzed for a linear viscoelastic layer, under the assumption that a Barenblatt type failure zone exists at the crack tip. In particular, the Ricmann-Hilbert method is utilized to construct expressions for the stress intensity factor and the energy release rate. The model allows very general time behavior for the shear modulus and specific numerical calculations are performed for both a standard linear solid and a power law material.
